Geeky Pursuits

I’ve finally finished my sketch submission for my new company’s annual art contest. This year’s theme is “Passion is…?” so I drew up something filled with characters and things related to my geeky hobbies.

Geeky Pursuits

We were also required to describe our work in 25 words or less and here is the best I can come up with:

“Being passionate about several geeky pursuits such as technology, speculative fiction, computer games and comics meant that each one is constantly vying for my attention.”

A submission can be a sketch, a sculpture, a painting or a photograph. Sketching is what I feel I do best so I went with that. I’m just hoping that nobody else has passed anything (or at least nothing better than mine) to increase my chances of winning the first prize, an 80Gb iPod. The winner will be announced on October 12 so that’s a month of anxious waiting. Wish me luck.

  1. Sorry for not replying sooner. Been very busy.

Thanks for the comments guys. πŸ™‚

  2. husay naman talaga ng kamay mo. parang si harry potter yung nakaupo ah πŸ™‚

    sana nga manalo ka.

    good luck…

  3. The drawing looks awesome…

But my only comment is that the dragon may give it a St.George Bank impression & if you’re working for St.George Bank competitor then they may not like the dragon…

But I like it because I work for them – lol!

  4. Thanks, cousin. πŸ˜€

  5. great drawing! good luck!

  6. Hi Blackdove. Thanks for the compliments. Regarding the lack of colour, I definitely understand how a work in black and white might appeal less to many people compared to something in colour. I have a friend who complains about the same thing to me. πŸ˜‰

There are two reasons why I made this black and white though. First reason is that I’m more proficient in drawing black and white works that something in colour, specially if I’m only limited to using traditional media (as in I can’t use my computer to colour the piece). Since I wanted to increase my chances of winning, I’d rather produce something that would look good in black and white than produce something that isn’t as good in colour. Second reason is that I feel there isn’t enough time to produce a good coloured piece.

I originally planned to draw this in colour using watercolour but I was afraid that I might make a mistake and ruin the whole thing. Pencils are easier since I can erase any mistakes if I need to. I also thought about using colour pencils to colour it instead. But, I don’t know whether to classify the work as a sketch or a painting during submission. In the end, I didn’t have time to put colour on it anyway so I just shaded it in with a plain graphite pencil instead. πŸ™‚

  7. The drawing is really really good, especially on how you satisfied the theme. My only other feedback is, it seems a little bland, coz there are no colors. For a non-artist like me, I wonder how it would fare with other entries which are just as good (as per criteria) but had lots of color.

But still, great job and good luck!

  8. Hi Linda. Thanks. I will. πŸ™‚

Hi Vince. Thanks. It is drawn with actual pencils since the contest prohibits the use of Photoshop and digital manipulation. πŸ™‚ As for the tennis ball, well, it was easier to draw than a badminton shuttlecock. :)) Actually, I’m not sure why I drew in a tennis ball there. I don’t even have one. I do have shuttlecocks and balls for squash but no tennis balls. Ah well. πŸ˜‰

  9. Great drawing. It looks like it’s hand drawn with a pencil. Is it? Or digital again?

    Hey….what’s a tennis ball doing on a geek’s desk?

  10. That’s really awesome!!!

I reckon you will win. Keep us posted!
