Gabriel and I have passed by the ANZ Gothic Bank several times but never really went in. So last week, our curiousity finally overcame us and we went to the bank’s free entry museum. We also went into the bank branch itself and let me tell you, once you step inside those big wooden doors, it’s like stepping back in time.
This impressive building was completed in 1887 to the cost of 77,000 pounds. According to the brochure, the exterior is influenced by Venetian and French gothic traditions. The columns and brackets are cast iron, made locally in a Carlton foundry and the ceiling was hand painted and gilded.
What’s more astonishing is this is an actual working bank. Imagine working under that beautiful ceiling and behind those old-fashioned wooden counters. Certainly a blast from the past!
